Wild birds in Ireland are afforded protection by the Wildlife Act (2000). All wild bird species in the UK are protected under the Countryside Act (1981) (as amended) with certain species are listed on Schedule 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (as amended).
The EU Birds Directive (2009/147/EC) also provides specific legislation aimed at birds. Species listed in Annex I and migratory species are subject to special conservation measures to protect their habitats, through the establishment of Special Protection Areas (SPAs).
