Farmland bird surveys

Due to its scale, farmland is the single most important bird habitat in Ireland. However, according to Bird Watch Ireland, specialist farmland bird species are in decline. Indeed more than half of the Red List of Birds of Conservation Concern in Ireland dependent upon lowland farming. Species such as Corncrake, Barn Owl, Lapwing, Chough and Yellowhammer require farming to create habitats for feeding and nesting. Unfortunately, recent changes to farming practices do not suit these species as much as traditional, more extensive methods.
